About - Marana Acupuncture in Tucson, ArizonaI practice with a compassionate focus on pain management, chronic health care issues, women’s reproductive health care, and delivery of comprehensive, effective Oriental Medicine that treats the whole person. Recognized as a leader in the field, with numerous awards and more than 20 years of experience, I have developed innovative approaches to treating difficult and painful issues such as Trigeminal Neuralgia, Bell’s Palsy, chronic neuropathic pain that often accompanies Diabetes and chemotherapy, and pain associated with auto-immune conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus and Behcet’s, as well as acute pain from injuries and accidents.

Women’s Health Care for the whole cycle of reproduction from puberty through the reproductive years, fertility challenges, to menopause (and beyond) are also areas of deep knowledge and practice experience.  I also practice Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture for the face, and neck, and integrate the Mei Zen abdominal protocol into fertility and women’s reproductive treatments.

I view my practice as a creative collaboration between patient and provider, and believe that health challenges – especially serious ones – provide opportunities for deep transformational healing.

“I believe there is nothing more meaningful than simply being present with people who are in pain or suffering, and then acting with skill and compassion to help foster the re-emergence of health and balance for them.”

In addition to Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, I utilize modalities such as Moxibustion, Cupping, Diet Therapy, Nutritional Supplements, Guided Imagery, Meditation, Breath Work, Qi-Gong, and Aromatherapy to assist my patients in achieving vibrant health.

My background includes training not only in Acupuncture, but in  Western Medicine, Meditation Instruction, Qi Gong, and Trauma Informed Care. I am licensed by the state of Arizona and nationally certified in Acupuncture by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

Your unique health care situation is of the utmost importance to me. I am happy to answer any questions you may have regarding how Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can benefit you. Together we can work toward achieving your health and wellness goals.

  • "A friend recommended Dawn-Starr to me when I was physically at my lowest, and completely frustrated with my regular doctors.  I have found Dawn-Starr to be extremely knowledgeable, professional, and persistent.  She is a warm and caring practitioner who spends quality time getting to know each individual.  Dawn-Starr has helped me to heal not only physically, but also emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.  Every time I come in for an appointment, I feel like I am at home.  She has created a comfort zone for those of us who need to focus on our own healing.  I highly recommend Dawn-Starr to everyone."  --KJ
  • “Thank you so much for all you have done to take pain out of my life and help me heal. I always enjoy my time with you. My favorite author once said: ‘If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any man or woman, I shall feel that I have worked with God.’ Please know by these standards you have worked with God greatly in all you have done for me.” –-BA

More about me...

My own experience with Chinese Medicine helped me recover from an "uncurable" Western diagnosis. Twenty five years ago, I came to Chinese Medicine as a patient who was ill, discouraged, afraid for my future, and desperate for help.  I got that, and more. What I found was a system of medicine that treated me--the individual--and not the label(s) applied to me by Western/allopathic medicine.  Through intense treatment, herbal medicine, complete re-arrangement of my diet, lifestyle, and the introduction of Qi Gong, yoga and meditation, I was able to achieve robust health and well-being.  I decided to pay it forward by studying and practicing this ancient and highly effective medicine.

My husband and I recently returned to the Southwest, after a 23 year hiatus in Portland, Oregon, where I established an outstanding, award-winning acupuncture clinic that was at the forefront of providing integrative care in the Northwest.

A dedicated student of meditation for more than 25 years, I am a Certified Teacher of Stanford University‘s Compassion Cultivation Training, and am also a meditation teacher with the Foundation for Active Compassion.

About - Marana Acupuncture in Tucson, Arizona

I enjoy bird watching, yoga, Qi Gong, snorkeling, cooking, and taking long walks with my two Labrador Retrievers Katie and Sadie. I am also a passionate gardener, and am re-discovering my love of xeric plants here in Tucson.

I also hold a Master of Fine Arts degree, and taught fine art photography at Arizona State University, College of the Atlantic, and the Oregon College of Art and Craft. My artwork focuses on gardens and plants and how they enrich our lives and environments, including the use of plant materials as medicine. I continue my photographic work, exploring a new love of encaustic and cold wax  painting, and exhibit my art nationally and internationally.
